University of Mumbai

University of Mumbai which started as the University of Bombay stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious public universities in India. The university which operates multiple campuses throughout Western India maintains its presence in Mumbai's coastal city and main educational center through its Fort and Vidyanagari campuses in Kalina. The university campus displays its famous Gothic Revival design through the Rajabai Clock Tower which serves as a landmark of the city's educational history.

The university established its formal existence on July 18, 1857 after "Wood's Despatch" established the basis for contemporary educational systems in India during the British colonial period. The university started as an examination organization which evolved into a teaching and research institution that followed the University of London model. The university experienced multiple name changes and campus expansions throughout its history which traced the transformation from Bombay to Mumbai. The institution maintains a strong connection to the Indian independence movement because it served as the educational institution for many of India's founding fathers and major social reformers. The institution officially adopted its new name University of Mumbai in 1996 after the city completed its renaming process which signified the beginning of a new period in its historical trajectory.
