Vellore Institute of Technology is a premier private university which operates as a deemed university in Vellore city of Tamil Nadu state in India. The institution began its operations in 1984 when Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former parliamentarian and minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu, established it as the Vellore Engineering College. The college started as a self-financing school which accepted 180 pupils but developed into an institution which achieved academic excellence. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development granted the college university status in 2001 which led to its rebranding as VIT University in 2006. The institution maintains its position as a top technical school in India which regularly achieves high rankings among engineering colleges and universities according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) system.
The university's mission is encapsulated in its motto, "A Place to Learn, A Chance to Grow." VIT established its educational standards because the university uses international educational benchmarks to create a successful learning environment which prioritizes student needs. The university developed its Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) as its most essential academic achievement which enables students to create their complete class schedule by selecting their desired courses and teachers and lesson times. The School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCOPE) and School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) school systems at the institution enable students to prepare for international job markets while they engage in research activities when they study our academic programs.
