Albion College

Albion College is a private, residential liberal arts college located in Albion, Michigan, and is historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The genesis of this university began in 1835 when it was chartered by the Michigan Territorial Legislature as the Spring Arbor Seminary. Facing challenges, the institution was subsequently moved and rechartered in 1843 in Albion, Michigan, as the Albion Female Collegiate Institute and Wesleyan Seminary. It operated for several years before the Michigan Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church took over its management. In 1861, the college department was formally organized, and the name was permanently changed to the university. Notably, the institution was a pioneer in co-education, having granted the first degree to a woman in the state of Michigan in 1869, underscoring its long-standing commitment to inclusive education and equality.
