Baldwin Wallace University

Baldwin Wallace University is a private, coeducational institution rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, located in Berea, Ohio, a suburb southwest of Cleveland. The university's mission is to offer a personalized, superior education that fosters personal and professional excellence and prepares students to be compassionate, contributing citizens in a global society. It provides a comprehensive range of bachelor's, master's, and professional education programs across its five specialized schools, including its internationally respected Conservatory of Performing Arts. Leveraging its close proximity to the diverse economic and cultural hub of Cleveland, this university integrates strong academic foundations with extensive opportunities for experiential learning and career application.

The university's history is characterized by a pioneering spirit of inclusion and merger. It was founded in 1845 as the Baldwin Institute by Methodist businessman John Baldwin in Berea, Ohio. Notably, the institution was among the first in the nation to admit students regardless of race or gender, with its first graduate being female. In 1856, it became Baldwin University. Separately, German Wallace College was established in the same town in 1863 to serve the growing German population, also through Methodist affiliation. Due to increasing financial pressures, the two neighboring schools merged in 1913 to form Baldwin-Wallace College. This combined entity continued to innovate, pioneering early programs for adult learners and veterans, and in 2012, officially changed its name to Baldwin Wallace University to reflect its comprehensive status.

This university successfully combines its historic legacy of open access and inclusion with a contemporary focus on professional excellence and innovation. Its core strength lies in its personalized learning environment and the high distinction of its performing arts and professional programs, which benefit greatly from the rich cultural and economic landscape of the greater Cleveland area. By providing robust academic support, faculty mentorship, and crucial real-world connections, the university ensures its graduates are prepared not just for careers, but for leading and contributing to society. Ultimately, this university is defined by its commitment to student success and the development of compassionate, globally aware leaders.
