Benedict College

Benedict College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts institution located in Columbia, South Carolina. As a historically Black college and university (HBCU), its core mission is deeply rooted in providing quality higher education and fostering intellectual, moral, and spiritual development for students from diverse backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on African American youth. The university offers a comprehensive range of bachelor's degree programs through its various academic schools, concentrating on creating an environment that encourages academic excellence, community service, and professional preparation. It is an integral part of the city's intellectual and cultural landscape, upholding a powerful legacy of empowerment and access.

This college was founded in 1870 by Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, with the express purpose of providing education to recently emancipated enslaved people. She purchased the former $32,000 Taylor mansion and grounds to establish the institution, which was initially named Benedict Institute. It began as a teaching college for the preparation of teachers and ministers, expanding to include industrial and vocational training, demonstrating an early commitment to both academic and practical skills necessary for community leadership. A major milestone occurred in 1894 when it was chartered as a college under the laws of South Carolina. Throughout the 20th century, this university grew its offerings, maintained its HBCU status, and continues to be sponsored by the American Baptist Churches, USA, honoring its foundational role in educating and elevating the African American community in the Southeast.

This college successfully carries forward its powerful 150-year-old mission as a beacon of educational opportunity and empowerment. Its strength lies in its HBCU identity, which fosters a culturally affirming and supportive environment while delivering a rigorous academic curriculum. By prioritizing access, quality instruction, and community service, the university plays a crucial role in developing African American professionals and leaders who impact various sectors globally. Ultimately, this university is defined by its unwavering dedication to the success of its students, embodying its core values of Faith, Excellence, Integrity, and Community to create leaders who are prepared for the challenges of the modern world.
