Brown University

Brown University is a private Ivy League research university. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, it ranks as the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, founded in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Over its history, Brown has been characterized by innovation, excellence, and access.  It was founded by the Baptists, and was one of the first collegiate institutions to be inclusive of all faiths.  It admitted female students during its early years, and has been an institution that provided access to a diverse population of individuals from all backgrounds.

During the 19th century, Brown emerged as an influential center of scientific research and discovery, exemplified by the transition to the scientific curriculum and approach established by President Francis Wayland.  Brown became home to a number of distinguished scientists, including Asa Gray (the father of American botany) and William James (the father of American psychology). During the 20th century, Brown continued to expand and grow, developing new academic departments and fields of study focused on engineering and business fields.  Brown also became a leader in the field of medical education, with the creation of the Brown University School of Medicine in 1971, and has become recognized as one of the leading medical schools in the United States.  Brown continues to focus on research and excellence in engineering and science, including computer science and mathematics.
