CDU is named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew, an African American physician known for his research on blood plasma transfusions. Drew established an independent blood bank for use in medical facilities during World War II and used his leadership position as a medical doctor to advocate for African American participation in medicine and to combat discriminatory practices in blood plasma donation. CDU seeks to train and educate health professionals who have a strong commitment to serving marginalized populations and improving their health outcomes.
