Eckerd College

Eckerd College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located on a waterfront campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bordered by the waters of Boca Ciega Bay, the college is renowned for its unconventional approach to higher education and its strong emphasis on global perspective and environmental awareness. It operates on a unique academic calendar and provides a curriculum that encourages students to think across traditional disciplinary boundaries. The college fosters a relaxed yet intellectually rigorous community where students are encouraged to be "thinkers, creators, and explorers" within a residential setting that takes full advantage of its subtropical environment.

The college was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College, born from a joint effort by the United Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in the United States to create a premier liberal arts institution in the South. Its first classes were held in 1960 at a temporary site before moving to its permanent 188-acre campus. From its inception, the school was designed to be innovative, pioneering the "Winter Term" concept and a mentor-based advising system. In 1972, the institution was renamed Eckerd College in honor of Jack Eckerd, a businessman and philanthropist whose significant endowment secured the school’s future. This history of academic experimentation has allowed the college to remain a leader in progressive liberal arts education for over six decades.

Eckerd College is a distinctive institution that successfully merges a progressive liberal arts philosophy with a world-class coastal environment. By prioritizing mentorship, hands-on marine research, and global engagement, the college prepares graduates to navigate a rapidly changing world with curiosity and technical skill. Its history of innovation and its commitment to utilizing its unique geography as an educational tool ensure that it remains a standout choice for students seeking a rigorous, experiential, and environmentally conscious education.
