From its inception, the school was designed to be innovative, pioneering the "Winter Term" concept and a mentor-based advising system. In 1972, the institution was renamed Eckerd College in honor of Jack Eckerd, a businessman and philanthropist whose significant endowment secured the school’s future. This history of academic experimentation has allowed the college to remain a leader in progressive liberal arts education for over six decades.
