Geneva College is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, approximately 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Affiliated with the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, the college integrates a rigorous academic curriculum with a Reformed Christian worldview. It is a founding member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and serves a dedicated residential community, offering over 145 undergraduate majors and programs designed to prepare students for both professional success and faithful service.
The college was founded in 1848 as Geneva Hall in Northwood, Ohio, originally serving as a theological seminary and school. Its first class consisted of 42 students who paid just eight dollars per semester. In 1872, the institution officially became Geneva College, but it soon faced economic challenges that prompted leadership to seek a new location. A turning point occurred in 1878 when the Harmony Society, a communal religious group and powerful business entity in Beaver County, offered the college 10 acres of land in Beaver Falls along with $20,000 in donations. This move in 1880 established the college's permanent home. Shortly after the relocation, the iconic Old Main was constructed for $20,000, becoming the enduring architectural symbol of the campus.
Geneva College stands as a historic pillar of Christian higher education, defined by its 175-year legacy of faith-based learning. By moving from its humble beginnings in Ohio to its prominent hillside campus in Beaver Falls, the college has solidified its role as a leader in the Reformed academic tradition. Its commitment to the "Education of the Whole Person" and its preservation of landmark architecture like Old Main provide a unique environment where history and modern scholarship intersect. It remains a premier choice for students seeking a rigorous academic experience deeply rooted in the Christian faith.
