Greenville University

Greenville University is a private, coeducational Christian university located on a 50-acre campus in Greenville, Illinois, about 45 miles east of St. Louis. Founded in 1892 by the Free Methodist Church, the institution was originally established to provide a "distinctive Christian influence" in higher education. Today, it serves a diverse student body of approximately 1,100 students, offering more than 50 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs. The university is deeply committed to a mission of empowering students for lives of "character and service" through a Christ-centered liberal arts education.

The university’s roots trace back to Almira College, a school for women founded in 1855. In 1892, leaders of the Free Methodist Church purchased the property to create a coeducational college that would integrate rigorous academics with Wesleyan theological traditions. For 125 years, it operated as Greenville College before officially transitioning to Greenville University in 2017. This change reflected its growing international reach and the expansion of its graduate and online offerings. As an affiliate of the Free Methodist Church, GU maintains a strong focus on "love-driven justice" and cross-cultural collaboration, requiring students to adhere to behavioral standards that reflect a Christian worldview, including regular chapel attendance.

Life at GU is centered around a close-knit residential community where the "entire campus is a laboratory" for personal growth. The university competes in NCAA Division III as the Greenville Panthers, primarily within the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The school has a storied athletic history, particularly in track and field, where it has won multiple NCCAA national championships. Beyond sports, students engage in a vibrant culture of worship and creativity, with facilities like the Blackroom—an intimate venue for live music and poetry—and the Factory Theatre. The university also maintains a strong commitment to service, with many students participating in local outreach and international mission trips as part of their "education for service."
