The college was founded in 1957 as Gulf Coast Community College, becoming the first public two-year institution established after the Florida Legislature created a statewide network of community colleges. During its early years, it operated out of temporary facilities at the Wainwright Shipyard before moving to its permanent 80-acre site provided by the city. The institution has undergone several name changes to reflect its evolving mission, including a transition to Gulf Coast Junior College in 1958 and back to Gulf Coast Community College in 1970. In 2011, after receiving accreditation to award four-year degrees, it was officially renamed Gulf Coast State College. Notably, the college has a history of inclusivity, having merged with Rosenwald Junior College in 1966, which was originally established to serve the African American community during the era of segregation.
