Penn State Mont Alto

Penn State Mont Alto is a commonwealth campus of the Pennsylvania State University located in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania, near the scenic Michaux State Forest. Serving as a vital educational hub for Franklin County and the surrounding region, the campus provides a small-college atmosphere with the vast resources of a world-class research university. It offers a variety of associate and baccalaureate degrees, with a particular emphasis on nursing, healthcare, and forestry. Known for its close-knit community and personalized faculty attention, Mont Alto serves both residential and commuter students, acting as a gateway to the broader Penn State system through its "2+2" program.

The campus has one of the most storied origins in the Penn State system, tracing its roots back to 1903 when it was founded as the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy. Established by Dr. Joseph Rothrock, it was one of the first public forestry schools in the nation, created to train "forest wardens" to restore Pennsylvania's depleted woodlands. In 1929, the academy merged with The Pennsylvania State College (now University), a move that was initially so unpopular with students that they famously protested by hanging state officials in effigy. Despite this rocky start, the campus flourished, serving as a specialized forestry training site before becoming a coeducational commonwealth campus in 1963. Today, the campus is home to Wiestling Hall, built in 1807, which is the oldest building in the entire Penn State system.

Penn State Mont Alto represents a unique intersection of environmental history and modern professional training. While it has evolved from a rugged forestry academy into a comprehensive university campus, it has never lost its connection to the surrounding landscape or its commitment to the success of its students. However, the university recently announced that the campus is slated to officially close after the Spring 2027 semester due to long-term enrollment declines and budget challenges. Until that time, it continues to serve as a beacon of the "We Are" spirit, providing a transformative education to its final generations of students and honoring a legacy that helped birth the modern American conservation movement.
