In 1929, the academy merged with The Pennsylvania State College (now University), a move that was initially so unpopular with students that they famously protested by hanging state officials in effigy. Despite this rocky start, the campus flourished, serving as a specialized forestry training site before becoming a coeducational commonwealth campus in 1963. Today, the campus is home to Wiestling Hall, built in 1807, which is the oldest building in the entire Penn State system.
