Penn State Shenango

Penn State Shenango is a public commonwealth campus of The Pennsylvania State University located in Sharon, Pennsylvania, right along the state’s border with Ohio. It is distinguished as the only truly urban campus within the Penn State system, spanning approximately 15 acres integrated directly into the downtown landscape of the Shenango Valley. Serving as a critical access point for higher education in northwestern Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, the campus offers a range of associate and baccalaureate degrees, as well as the ability to begin the first two years of nearly all of Penn State’s 275+ majors. With a small student population, it provides an intimate, supportive environment where students benefit from the prestige of a global research university coupled with the personal attention of a small college.

The campus was founded in 1965 as a result of a grassroots community effort led by the Shenango Valley Citizens College Procurement Committee. Local residents raised over $200,000—a significant sum at the time—to match federal and state grants to establish a Penn State presence in the valley. The college initially operated out of the east wing of Kennedy Christian High School before moving into the heart of downtown Sharon. The campus grew by repurposing historic local landmarks, such as the Lecture Hall, which was originally built in 1903 as the city's Central School. Over the decades, the institution evolved from the "Shenango Valley Campus" to Penn State Shenango, undergoing major facility upgrades including the 2021 multi-million dollar renovation of the Forker Laboratory. In a significant institutional development, the Penn State Board of Trustees announced in May 2025 that the campus is scheduled for closure following the Spring 2027 semester due to long-term enrollment declines, marking the sunset of its 60-year history as a regional educational anchor.

Penn State Shenango has long served as a resilient bridge between the industrial heritage of the Shenango Valley and the future of its workforce. By maintaining a deep-seated commitment to its urban community and fostering an environment of innovation through its LaunchBox initiatives, the campus has provided thousands of students with a path to social mobility and professional success. While the institution prepares to conclude its academic operations in 2027, its legacy remains firmly embedded in the professional landscape of northwestern Pennsylvania and the countless "Penn State stories" it helped author over six decades. It remains a testament to what community-driven advocacy can achieve in the realm of public higher education.
