Penn State Worthington Scranton

Penn State Scranton is a commonwealth campus of Pennsylvania State University located in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, serving the greater Scranton area and Northeast Pennsylvania. Situated on a 45-acre hillside campus, it offers the intimate feel of a small college combined with the prestige and extensive resources of a world-class research university. The campus serves as a critical educational hub, providing 14 baccalaureate degrees and several associate degrees that can be completed entirely on-site. It also supports the 2+2 Plan, enabling students to begin any of Penn State’s 275+ majors at Scranton before transitioning to University Park or another campus to finish their degree.

The campus traces its roots back to 1923, when Penn State established a branch school in Scranton to offer evening technical programs. After decades of operating in temporary locations, including the Longfellow School Annex, the campus moved to its current Dunmore site in 1968. It was originally named Penn State Worthington Scranton in honor of Worthington Scranton, a prominent local industrialist and philanthropist whose family played a pivotal role in the region's development. In May 2018, the university officially changed its name to Penn State Scranton to better reflect its geographic location and its evolution into a comprehensive four-year institution. This name change coincided with the campus's 50th anniversary at its current location, marking a half-century of providing accessible higher education to the Lackawanna Valley.

Penn State Scranton serves as a vital anchor for social and economic mobility in Northeast Pennsylvania, blending a century-long legacy of technical training with modern academic excellence. By maintaining strong ties to the Scranton family and the local business community while offering the global reach of the Penn State brand, the campus provides a uniquely "local yet global" experience. Its transformation from an evening technical institute to a comprehensive university campus underscores its commitment to the 21st-century needs of its students. It remains the premier choice for students in the region seeking a high-value degree in a supportive, student-centered environment.
