Philander Smith College

Philander Smith University (formerly Philander Smith College) is a private, historically Black university (HBCU) located in Little Rock, Arkansas. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, it is a founding member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and stands as the only UNCF member institution in the state. The university is dedicated to a mission of "graduating academically accomplished students who are grounded as advocates for social justice."

The university was founded in 1877 as Walden Seminary by the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Freedmen’s Aid Society, making it the first attempt west of the Mississippi River to provide higher education for formerly enslaved African Americans. In 1882, the school was renamed Philander Smith College to honor the financial contributions of the widow of Philander Smith, an Illinois philanthropist whose endowment allowed for significant expansion. It was officially chartered as a four-year college in 1883 and conferred its first baccalaureate degree in 1888. Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, Philander Smith students were at the forefront of local activism, notably participating in "sit-ins" at downtown Little Rock lunch counters in the 1960s. In August 2023, the institution achieved a major milestone by officially transitioning to Philander Smith University, following the launch of its first graduate degree program.

Philander Smith University stands as a resilient pillar of the HBCU community, bridging its 19th-century missionary roots with a 21st-century mandate for social equity. By evolving from a small seminary into a comprehensive university with a growing graduate presence, it continues to prove its vitality as an engine for Black intellectual and professional achievement. Its commitment to "the education of the heart" ensures that its graduates are not only career-ready but are also prepared to be the moral conscience of their communities. For students seeking a rigorous, faith-based education in a historic urban setting, Philander Smith University remains a premier and essential choice.
