Resurrection University, which officially rebranded as Oak Point University in 2021, was a private, healthcare-focused institution originally based in Chicago, Illinois. For over a century, it specialized exclusively in nursing and health sciences, operating as an "upper-division" school where students typically transferred to complete their final two years of a bachelor's degree or pursued graduate-level certifications. The university was widely recognized for its high-tech simulation labs and its deep integration with the Chicago healthcare community, particularly through its historical ties to Catholic medical providers.
The university’s legacy began in 1914 as the West Suburban Hospital School for Nurses in Oak Park. Over the following decades, it underwent several name changes and institutional shifts, including a significant affiliation with Concordia College in the 1980s and 90s. In 2004, the school was acquired by Resurrection Health Care, leading to its most recognizable name: Resurrection University. It eventually moved its main operations to the LEED-certified Presence Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Chicago’s Wicker Park. In 2021, the institution transitioned to independent status and adopted the name Oak Point University, moving its primary campus to a modern 78,000-square-foot facility in Oak Brook, Illinois.
In a significant development for the regional education landscape, Oak Point University officially closed on April 19, 2024. The closure was attributed to a dramatic decline in enrollment following the pandemic and various financial challenges. To ensure students could finish their education, the university established a teach-out agreement with Lewis University, allowing current students to transfer their credits and complete their degrees at the same tuition rate. While the physical campuses in Wicker Park and Oak Brook are no longer active, the university’s legacy lives on through more than a century of alumni who serve as essential healthcare providers across the Midwest.
