Russell Sage College

Russell Sage College is a private university in New York’s Capital Region, maintaining two distinct coeducational campuses in Troy and Albany. Founded as a pioneering institution for women's independence, it has evolved into a comprehensive college that blends a traditional liberal arts foundation with specialized professional preparation. The college was founded in 1916 in Troy by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, a prominent philanthropist and suffragist, and named in honor of her late husband, financier Russell Sage. Working with Eliza Kellas, head of the Emma Willard School, Margaret Sage established the college to provide women with a "School of Practical Arts" that would offer them economic independence. During World War II, an emergency men’s division was created to serve the community, which eventually led to the 1949 opening of a coeducational division in Albany. For decades, the institution operated as The Sage Colleges, a system that included a women's college in Troy and a coed college in Albany. However, in 2020, the institution unified all its divisions under a single name, Russell Sage College, officially becoming a fully coeducational institution across both campuses.
