University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a public land-grant research university in Champaign, Illinois. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) was founded in 1867 as a land-grant university, one of 37 public universities established by the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862. It opened its doors to students on March 2, 1868, with two faculty members and 77 students.
UIUC's early years were focused on agriculture and engineering, but the university quickly expanded its curriculum to include a wide range of liberal arts and sciences disciplines. In 1885, the university officially changed its name from Illinois Industrial University to the University of Illinois. UIUC experienced rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1909, it had one of the largest libraries in the nation. In 1888 and 1904, the university established the agricultural and engineering experiment stations, respectively, demonstrating its commitment to research. UIUC continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century. In 1967, the university was reorganized into three campuses: Urbana-Champaign, Chicago Circle, and Medical Center (Chicago). In 1982, the two Chicago campuses merged.
Today, UIUC is one of the largest public universities in the United States, with over 56,000 students. It is a major research institution, with over $650 million in research expenditures in fiscal year 2023. UIUC is also known for its strong academics, vibrant student life, and Division I athletics program. UIUC has a vibrant student life, with over 900 student organizations and clubs.
