University of Manitoba

University of Manitoba stands as the first university established in Western Canada and operates as a major public research institution in Winnipeg Manitoba. The university functions as the largest educational institution in the province while belonging to U15 Canadian research universities which indicates its important contribution to both national and international research activities. The organization maintains its primary operations across two significant campuses which include the historic Fort Garry campus that sits along the Red River and the Bannatyne campus which exists in downtown Winnipeg. The university uses its dedication to research and student wellness to function as an intellectual center which combines Indigenous knowledge systems with the cultural practices of its international student body.

The University of Manitoba started its existence on February 28 1877 when Alexander Morris established the university through the University of Manitoba Act. The original organization developed as a federation between three denominational colleges which included Collège de Saint-Boniface St. John’s College and Manitoba College so that these institutions could award degrees to their students. The university extended its academic reach through partnerships with medical and pharmaceutical and agricultural colleges which led to its transformation into a teaching institution after the provincial legislature passed an act in 1900. The Fort Garry campus moved to its current location in the early 20th century because of its proximity to the Manitoba Agricultural College which resulted in the development of essential buildings such as the Administration Building and Tache Hall.
