University of Montréal

Université de Montréal (UdeM) is a French-language public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The university's main campus is located in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce on Mount Royal near the Outremont Summit, in the borough of Outremont.
The Université de Montréal was founded in 1878 as a satellite campus of the Université Laval in Quebec City. It was then known as the Université Laval à Montréal. The move initially went against the wishes of Montréal's prelate, who advocated an independent university in his city.
In 1887, the École Polytechnique de Montréal became affiliated with the Université Laval à Montréal. In 1915, so did the École des hautes études commerciales, Canada's first school of management.
In 1919, the Université Laval à Montréal was granted a papal charter, making it an independent institution. The provincial charter followed in 1920.
In 1942, the university moved from its original location in the Quartier Latin to its present location on Mount Royal. The new campus was designed by the renowned architect Ernest Cormier.
Today, the Université de Montréal is a leading research university with a global reputation. It is committed to excellence in teaching and research, and it plays a vital role in the economic, social, and cultural life of Montreal and Quebec.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, University of Montréal is positioned as the #159 top university in the world, which makes it the #7 top university in Canada. The university's global rank decreased by 18 points from last year.
